Hai Lugz!

We're in for a real treat for next week's LUG Meeting! We've got Kat
Leung, Joel Ebel, and Aaron Joyner from Google coming to give a talk
for the LUG about Linux at Google and other such nonsense. :)

We'll be meeting in Engineering Building 1 Room 1007 at our usual
time, 19:00.

RSVP here or else -> http://tinyurl.com/ncsugooglelug

Happy hacking,

Speaker Bios:

Joel Ebel attended NC State from 1997 to 2002, graduating in Computer
Engineering with minors in Math, Physics, and Outdoor Leadership. He
worked with ResNet for several years, developing RUNT Linux, a USB
flash drive based linux, before the popularity of live CDs, to assist
in diagnosing student computers. Joel spent a few years working as
the system administrator for Student media, maintaining workstations
and servers. Setting up the WNCW live stream was one of his more
enjoyable tasks. In 2005, Joel joined Google, moving to CA. He spent
the first 5 years working on Goobuntu, our internal variant of Ubuntu
Linux which every engineer within the company uses. Now he's an SRE
at the Lenoir NC datacenter. Aaron and Joel both work on the Core SRE
team which keeps many low level services running smoothly.

Aaron S. Joyner is a Sr. System Administrator in the Site Reliability
Engineering (SRE) group at Google. He has been working as a SysAdmin
for more than 15 years at companies such as Global Knowledge,
Intrex.net, and MWG Biotech. When living in Raleigh, he was actively
involved with the Triangle Linux Users Group, serving on the steering
committee as SysAdmin in 2004-2005, and giving talks on DNS for NC*SA
and TriLUG. Since joining Google in 2005, he has helped to maintain
their internal DNS infrastructure and been primarily responsible for
designing, implementing, and supporting Google's serial console
systems. For the past ~3 years, he has been leading a team of SREs
responsible for supporting the production authentication and machine
management systems.

Folks,

NC State's University's 5th annual FOSS Fair is in a little more than 2
weeks. Which means you have just a hair over a week to reserve your
lunch! Head over to our Wiki and reserve your food, and sign up to give
a session!

https://opensource.ncsu.edu/FossFair2013

This year we are giving away a Raspberry Pi with enclosure, SD card, and
power adaptor. You must be present to win.

Gasp! The FOSS Fair has gone social. Like us on Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/NcsuFossFair

and join our Google Community!

https://plus.google.com/u/1/communities/115369091843299340808

Want to help out with this year's FOSS Fair? Then tell others about the
Fair and encourage others to come give a talk. Blog about the FOSS
Fair. Tweet about the FOSS Fair. Spread the word. Forward this email.
Also, somebody to man the registration table would be awesome.

See you there!

Subject: Reminder: Constitutional amendments to be voted on tonight
Message-ID: <CAMjyYxqr2Z+vHny6rfJtbMaGWfbVQPbTWEJOQhCOS5AKac5hrQ@mail.gmail.[redacted]>

Hello, LUGgers,

Sorry that this wasn't included in the original email, but at our dinner
meeting tonight, we will be voting on two amendments to the LUG's
constitution. These were presented at the semester planning meeting three
weeks ago, so it is now time to put them to a vote.

The full text of the amendments is at
http://lug.ncsu.edu/wiki/2013-01-14_Planning_Meeting/, but I'll copy the
pertinent details here.

The first amendment is the Officers Amendment. This rephrases the
descriptions of the President, Vice President, and Treasurer slightly, and
replaces the position of Secretary with a Public Relations Officer. In
practice, we have been electing our Secretary to serve as a PR officer for
two semesters now, so this merely updates the Constitution to match our
current practices.

The second amendment is the Purpose Amendment. Currently, the officially
defined purpose of the LUG is, "to promote the use and usability of Linux
in the NCSU community. This includes such activities such as informational
talks, installfests, and open forums." The Purpose Amendment would alter
our official mission to:

* To promote the understanding of computers and computer science,
* to encourage creative endeavors in computing,
* to provide a forum for learning about and discussing recent developments
in computing, and
* to support the use and development of free and open source software.

Again, this is basically an update of the Constitution to match current
practices.

We'll be voting on the amendments at dinner tonight -- 19:00 at Melvin's,
above The Alley on Hillsborough Street. If you have concerns about either
amendment, please come to the meeting tonight, or make your objections
known on the mailing list. If anyone has serious objections to these
amendments, we can postpone the vote until everyone's concerns have been
addressed.

Thanks,
Matthew "leafstorm" Frazier
LUG Vice President

FOSS Fair Greetings!

NC State University's 5th Annual FOSS Fair is only a day away. The food
has been ordered -- we get breakfast this year too! The Raspberry Pi to
give away is sitting right beside me. We've also got a great line up of
talk ideas and more to come tomorrow.

If you are not signed up for the FOSS Fair we still have room. (Please
note that the deadline to be included in the food count has past.) If
you have signed up, don't forget to show up!

https://opensource.ncsu.edu/FossFair2013

We'll have a GPG/PGP key signing event this year as well. If you would
like to participate bring multiple copies of your fingerprint to hand to
the other participants. (gpg --fingerprint) Also, bring two forms of
identification.

Don't forget to stick around for FOSS Fair Pub after the event!
Directions, parking information, and all you need is on the wiki page
above. See you tomorrow!

Hai Lugz:

Tonight we're going to have a session of lightning talks, where
instead of us getting a presenter, you get up and present for us instead!

If you're not familiar with the concept of a lightning talk, it goes
something like this: you come up with something really small you want
to share, like a project you're working on, a cool thing you learned
about erlang, or a funny thing that happened on the way to campus.
Whether it's technical or stand-up, you've got 5 minutes to present
before I play a really rude noise on my computer to drown you out!

Our lightning talks will be in Hunt 4411 (the room next to the 3d
printer) at 19:00. Depending on how many people come and want to
present, you may get between 5 and 10 minutes to present.

Don't be shy! Come on out and present something you think is cool!
